How to register a death
If you want to register the death of a British citizen who died in Croatia you may do so at the British Embassy in Zagreb. You may also apply at the consulates in Split and Dubrovnik, but the applications will be forwarded to Zagreb, since only Zagreb holds the Register of Deaths.
Consular death registration is not a legal requirement but there are some benefits:
- An entry will be made in the death registry at the British Embassy Zagreb
- You will be provided with a British style death certificate
- A record of the death will be held by the General Register Office in the UK.
You will need to register the death with the foreign civil authorities and obtain a full foreign death certificate before you can apply for consular death registration. The consular death certificate will not include a cause of death as many foreign death certificates do not include this detail.
Documents required:
- local Death Certificate (‘Izvadak iz Matice Umrlih’ or ‘Smrtni List’)
- deceased person’s passport (for cancellation)
- the applicant's identification document (passport or ID card)
- the death registration form filled in
